Merrill on Q3 GDP and Headwinds

Syringe, we have excess Canadians out "In our new pod"....maybe you could balance them out with your stench?

The "strong"(which it is not) dollar also forces more companies into domestic spending. A "drag" is a total myth. People need to get over currency myths.

Weaker data, particularly for inventories, has contributed to lower GDP tracking, and we are now incorporating that weakness into our official forecast, cutting 3Q real GDP growth by 0.8pp to 1.2%.

That's not cutting, that's slashing. I'm liking GDPNow better all the time.

Actually I see 200 and 400 year gaps, with a good deal of slack. I think that's basically an accident, though. That doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would have a rough cycle like, say, earthquakes. More likely, there's a certain risk with every big El Nino. Certainly it's a concern for this coming winter; I just don't agree with the "we're due" idea.

I think a better risk assessment, very very roughly, would be: assuming 1 whopper El Nino every 20 years, we have 100 El Ninos and 5 whopper flood event in 2000 years. So, a 5% chance of a massive flood this year. Very rough, as I said; I didn't bother to look up the frequency of big El Ninos.

I wish I could truly share my banal wonderment with others, but I rarely find anyone more than 10 years old with such a naïve view of the inherent beauty of an incredibly intricate reality built from relatively simple rules.

Particular awe at the fundamental grace that is embedded in every facet of our universe strikes me through the basic obfuscations that underpin everything: mysteries are definitionally a part of each and every one of us.

Quantum mechanics, Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem -- to say nothing of our modern ability to understand these wonders, and the incredible minds that collaborated indirectly, through civilization, over centuries to achieve that understanding. We now know enough to prove factually that we will never know everything, and that knowledge itself is perhaps the most profound realization we have ever achieved.

Even after years of watching the horrors that people incur both accidentally and deliberately upon each other, I wake each day wearing rose-colored glasses and bearing an endless fascination for this bizarre universe that we are all so fortunate to share.

This is because the recent revelations about Filoviruses' ability to persist in the body concern me and there are now so many human reservoirs. It gives an almost endless window of opportunity not only for reinfection, but also for mutation to allow the viruses to gradually adapt to us as more natural hosts for the zoonoses.

Thank goodness we've made progress on real vaccines -- a category that does not, in my esteem, include monoclonal antibodies -- but we don't know whether those vaccines trigger serious damage themselves yet, and if the reservoirs are in body parts that are naturally insulated from the immune system, it might not be as efficacious as we might wish. I look forward to clinical trials, but I have no idea how to do those with real scientific precision while still somehow getting past an IRB.

If nothing emerges for a few months, I'll go with the working assumption that these reservoirs are contained in ways that make them not readily transmissible, but it's only prudent to give Ebolavirus a little more time to surprise us.

They got everyone off the highway and detoured, going to LA by Omaha type of thing, but it seems to have worked.

"The worst part is what he's cutting and why. In addition to cutting salaries, he's cutting fundraising (guess he really believes in Republican tactics - cut your income to fix a deficit). But worst is that he's cutting back on salaries and organizing to - run more TV ads. Yep, it's fork time."

Jeeeebbbbbb really could be stupider than his brother.
I didn't think that was possible--but it was.
Stick a fork in him; he's done.

Of course, if you cut taxes another 130%, the growth potential is enormous.
And you can balance the deficit to put a ball gag in Paul Ryan!
(Well, maybe you won't cut the deficit, but 1 out of 2 ain't bad, if you're a deficit troll who wants to cut taxes for the .1%.)
And you can always stick the deficit on the Democrats. Winning!
There really isn't a hole in that strategy.
Cut taxes--raise the structural deficit, blame it on the Democrats, and crawfish about deficits.
Winning!
(It doesn't decrease deficits, but it sounds really nice and sanctimonious, which is what the GOP apparently has fellated to, for 20 years.)

I forgot--then default on the debt, to show one's fiscal responsibility.
That'll get the suckers--every time!

We really, really, really, really, really wanted to fix those bridges and roads, really we did.
But we had to cut taxes for the Koches to stimulate!
(Deficit troll meme.)
You know those bridges will libertarianly fix themselves!

Who knew deserts are prone to flooding.

Still, apparently Houston is impressive. Soon to be the US 3rd largest city?

Like, 3 downtowns? And a nice zoo?

robj, maybe you shoulda rented your Houston and your CO places.

I think I pretty much have summarized the GOP election meme.
Other than Planned Parenthood.
And Benghazi.
And why did Obama get us into Iraq? Or, why did he not win Iraq? It's a Mobius strip.

"Still, apparently Houston is impressive. Soon to be the US 3rd largest city? "

Houston has been a cancerous tumor since the 70's whose growth is unchecked.
It now is 3x (probably 4-5x) the size of Rhode Island and is reaching LA gridlock, at least on I-10 and I-45.
Good peeps, though, god help them.

There are more like 4-5 downtowns, Outsider.
The yewts can have our place; they wanted it to raise their yewts, just like us.
I suspect values will go down over the next few years, until earl adjusts.

I'll call my pals Monday to see whether they have been warshed away.
And the AgedP up in Cowtown tomorrow.

Texas is a harsh land.
I'm sure the Abbot and the Cruzmissile will refuse gubbermint aid, to demonstrate their big swinging resolve.

I'm hoping the opportunity will open up for eldest there, but only time will tell.

Picked the right tile, didn't I. Wink

I was in a supermarket checkout line in the CVBB recently and one of the tabloid weekly newspapers headline had a picture of HRC and said "Is Hillary Going To Prison?"

The gentleman in front of me felt it necessary to point to said rag and tell me "she ought to go to jail!" and I asked why?

He told me "2 servicemen were killed because of her!"

So I asked "what of the 4,486 servicemen killed in Iraq?"

He told me "that's different".

Typical. Just get the Ad, but not the Video..... Pitchforks and Torches

I haven't seen Mary yet at the new site. I hope she overcomes the fear of being flagged.

There's no flag for mangled syntax, so she should be perfectly safe Wink
