Uber Said to Plan Another $1 Billion in Fund-Raising

OCT. 23, 2015

Just three months after raising an enormous sum of money from investors, Uber is at it again.

Uber, a ride-hailing service, is planning to raise close to $1 billion in new venture capital from investors, according to people close to the matter. Investors are looking at a valuation of $60 billion to $70 billion.

If successful, the round of fund-raising would make Uber the world’s most valuable private start-up by far. A round this summer valued the company at more than $50 billion, a bit more than Facebook was valued at after its last big round of private capital fund-raising in 2011.

The furious pace at which Uber has been raising money is every bit as eye-popping as its soaring valuations. The latest round of financing will be the eighth that the company has sought over the last five years."

Drug 'super tunnel' with railway raided on Mexico border - CNN.com

8:14 AM ET, Sat October 24, 2015 |

(CNN) "Smugglers on the U.S.-Mexico border have become so sophisticated in moving drugs that one "super tunnel" raided this week featured a railway.

The tunnel stretched the length of eight football fields, from a Tijuana warehouse to a San Diego warehouse, and had a rail system, lighting, electricity, and metal beams to prevent a cave-in.

Authorities confiscated at least 12 tons of marijuana with a street value of $6 million and arrested 22 people in San Diego and Tijuana in connection with the one of the largest tunnels uncovered in recent years."

"We see a super tunnel open for business once every year or so," U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy of Southern California said in a statement. "Just when traffickers think they're ready to move, we put them out of business."

KP real farmers don't move....

I've seen 2 bears in 10 years around these parts, and a dozen in 3 months this summer-fall. I had never seen bear shit on the property heretofore.

Greece sets red line in mortgage talks: no mass foreclosures
| Reuters

Sat Oct 24, 2015 2:15am BST

"Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday said his country would fully meet its obligations under a multi-billion euro bailout but would not tolerate mass foreclosures on problem mortgage loans for thousands of indebted people.

Setting a red line in talks with the country's lenders now in Athens for consultations, Tsipras said turning the country into an "arena of confiscations" of homes was out of the question.

Although he did not so directly, he was implicitly referring to talks with creditors, which have hit a snag over protection of primary residences of homeowners who cannot afford to pay their mortgages."

You guys know my stance on marginalization. The new site is designed to curb excess through marginalization and furthermore encourages self righteous bully behavior on the part of the community to police itself. Orwellian with merit badges. Now excess can be bad, but we had the ignore here to deal with excess at a personal irritant level. I'm excessive by nature, fond of long posts, and creative sessions, and have never been on topic during my tenure on HCN, here you can ignore me but I still have a free voice to pursue what interests me. The new format is going to kill the soul of the current community by enforcing increasing conformity in narrow bandwidths of thought. It will kill creativity and the sparks of insight I came to HCN for. Great for texting little one up witty sayings and icons, but not the place for posting that dream analysis or exploration into Kant and Jung. Again for those of you who are only here for a little casual conversation and light fare...I understand the appeal to migrate and keep going. But for me personally, I can't flourish in a straight jacket, padded cell, surrounded by thought police. Nor do I wish to approach the new site like a Capture the Flag game, scurrying the code and rules to find some advantage to 'win'. That again is where I'm coming from.

I'm looking at Discourse not only as an HCN platform, but for its potential as something that a less intense community could use.

From that perspective, I'm concerned about the complexity - would an uncommitted or casual visitor ever spend enough time on the platform to figure out how to use it?

The author(s) have a background in social systems at BigCos, where human moderation cannot be scaled due to cost reasons. It looks like they have applied their experience to make the system as self-moderating as possible.

but that's not a rebuttal of it being orwellian - its just stating that its a automated, low human intervention - orwellian. NOW that IS ORWELLIAN.

And one can't even rant at the moderating software.... well... actually software adepts and enthusiasts will have a field day trying to "break moderation".

Separately I looked up the palaver that goes into "the flag"..

http://www.correa.in/pdf/cosn-2013.pdf

A question can be ‘closed’ for five reasons
– duplicate, off-topic, subjective, not a real question and too localized.[low quality?]
In this work, we present the first study of ‘closed’ questions
on Stack Overflow. We download 4 years of publicly available data
which contains 3.4 Million questions. We first analyze and characterize
the complete set of 0.1 Million ‘closed’ questions. Next, we
use a machine learning framework and build a predictive model to
identify a ‘closed’ question at the time of question creation.
One of our key findings is that despite being marked as ‘closed’,subjective questions contain high information value and are very popular with the users.

when digging into why our season ticket base is so small, i was told it is because we can’t get 35-55 white males and corporations to buy season tixs and they are the primary demo for season tickets around the league. when i pushed further, folks generally shrugged their shoulders. then i start looking around our arena during games and notice the following:

— it’s 70 pct black

— the cheerleaders are black

— the music is hip hop

— at the bars it’s 90 pct black

— there are few fathers and sons at the games

— we are doing after game concerts to attract more fans and the concerts are either hip hop or gospel.

Native American Reservations?

I counted 14 piles of bear scat on the all cats and no cattle ranch the other day.

I think only one or two bears at my friend's place in western OR. Lots of apple-heavy bear scat though, had to pick my way around it when I was helping her pick the (remaining) apples. Drought/searching for food forced them out of the national forest and onto the land of people in that valley. They climb up into the trees to get at the apples & seem to have no idea of which branches can support their weight so some of the trees lost some branches too. Contributing to the damage done by elk earlier in the year.

She put up some hot wire around her house, garden closest to the house and some of the fruit trees, that seemed to help somewhat.

You're right, they'd be closest. Unless they pick the right (sufficiently isolated) spots though, some tribal members might object and some tribes have tribal police, who might also object. Not sure if tribal lands are truly sovereign territory in all respect though. Be interesting to see how the wimps of the DC court dealt w/the question though.

I have a friend up in Mendo who has a bear problem-- she has many fruit trees.

My friend knows one or two people who hunt bear (in season), I believe she's told them they're welcome to hunt on her land when the season starts. She/we finished picking apples about two weeks ago though, by now the bears have probably realized there's nothing left to eat & are looking elsewhere for food.

Also: In California, Uber driver is employee, not contractor: agency
| Reuters
OR labor commissioner issued an "advisory opinion" (typically weak when it comes to protecting workers) that Uber drivers were probably employees, not contractors.

It'll cut down on profitability, if Uber has to pay any benefits, etc.

Some courts have been recognizing that some temps and contractors are actually employees, and that their employers have been utilizing the status of "temp" and "contractors" to avoid paying benefits, etc. While some other states are happily cooperating in the destruction of the workers comp system. There was some information there re: consequences if other posters disapprove of your posts. I couldn't read the page that apparently listed some rules or guidelines. Maybe that's where Vonbek got his information.

There was one thread I looked at that indicated there was a character limitation until you'd proven to be ok--or that's what some posters indicated, don't know if what they posted was accurate.

I'm not impressed w/the new site, partly because it's harder to follow/less readable. I registered but the site seems far less usable then this one.

Ahhh the famous "go to 204" riposte of Soapbox - DEC's free-for-all-no-moderation forum.

Back in the 80's & early 90's I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation. ...One of the applications we used was called Vax Notes, sort of a precursor to modern online forums, and blogs.

In EasyNotes, each topic had an index number and a title. One of the forums I frequented was called SoapBox, which was the sort-of off-topic Notes forum (most others were work related). Topci 204 was titles "You're an idiot!".

When someone was trolling particularly vigorously, or otherwise just being, well, an idiot, in some other topic, someone else would eventually tell the the offender to "go to 204!". That way you could call the miscreant an idiot without actually callling him an idiot.

Of course, when I saw the title of this post...

Speaking of Russians--
"Meanwhile, flying missions over Iraq is the logical next step for The Kremlin in Russia’s bid to supplant the US as Mid-East superpower puppet master. One would be hard pressed to come up with a more humiliating scenario for Washington than for the US to be effectively kicked out of the country it “liberated” over a decade ago by Vladimir Putin on the excuse that try as they may (or may “not”, depending on how prone you are to conspiracy theories), the Americans are apparently not very good at fighting terror.

Just like in Syria, Russian airstrikes would be supported by Iran-backed fighters on the ground, and thanks to the IRGC’s grip over Iraqi politics, Moscow would find Baghdad very receptive to Russia’s presence in the country. "

I just have to (Self-deprecatory) laugh at this :

Sugihara and his colleagues are now putting their insight to use. Earlier this year they reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) that their method predicted the 2014 Fraser River salmon run more precisely than any other method. Sugihara’s technique predicted a run of between 4.5 million and 9.1 million fish,

I say old boy - rather a broad range no ?

while the Pacific Salmon Commission’s models predicted anywhere from 6.9 million to 20 million fish—a forecast so broad as to be of little benefit to, for instance, a fisher wanting to know how many boats to deploy in the coming season. The final count was around 8.8 million.
